Blandy's Bual Madeira 10YR
Blandy’s 10 Year Bual Madeira is a meticulously crafted wine, combining age-old techniques with detailed knowledge of varietal evolution in Blandy’s 12 different ageing rooms located at The Blandy’s Wine Lodge in Funchal and the Winery in Caniçal. Made predominantly from Bual grapes grown on the south coast of Madeira between Ribeira Brava and Calheta, this wine undergoes manual harvest with qualitative selection, pellicular maceration, and 4-6 days of fermentation with natural yeast at controlled temperatures of 18°C - 21°C. Fortification with 96% grape-origin alcohol arrests fermentation at the desired sweetness. A blend of Madeira wines with an average age of 10 years, aged in seasoned oak casks using the traditional ‘Canteiro’ system, it is fined before bottling.
This Madeira presents a bright crystalline golden-brown color with golden reflections and a complex bouquet of dried fruits like figs and plums, almonds, wood, caramelized and vanilla notes, cinnamon, and sweet spices. The palate is medium sweet, well-balanced with soft, smooth notes of fruit cake, liqueur, and candied fruit, finishing with a pleasant and persistent aftertaste of honey and ginger biscuits. Blandy’s 10 Year Bual pairs excellently with foie gras, aged gouda, blue cheese, nuts, dried fruits, fruitcake, and crème brûlée. The wine is produced on Madeira Island, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 900 km from the Portuguese coast and 600 km from Africa, with volcanic soils and a temperate oceanic climate.
